Initially created for the students and visitors of Mark Arts at the Mary R Koch Arts Center, this book was intended as a companion guide for Katie’s painting, Materials and Tools featured in the museum’s permanent collection. It details how and why this painting was created, and contains a letter written to the 'Eternal Student' that reveals the intimate details of creative expression. Katie writes, "This is as much a letter to myself, as it is to you . . . a reminder of the wisdom that has been passed down throughout the ages . . . a reminder of the artistic tradition to which we all belong . . . a reminder that we harness everything within. May the ideas presented here serve to assist you in your artistic endeavors, as you breathe life into the far reaches of your imagination."

This newly expanded third edition includes more step-by-step painting examples and explorations in the act of creative expression, and is now available to anyone wishing to join this artistic journey. “To my fellow eternal students, thank you for finding me here. I am honored to be walking this path with you.” — Swatland

Printed by Puritan Capital in the United States, with the same attention to detail and high-quality printing techniques as Katie’s first book, ‘Alla Prima II: COMPANION.’ This book is 8.5” x 9.5” landscape and contains 64 pages, 57 images. Comes with a 1.5” x 7” bookmark. A companion sketchbook is available here

Curation and "Why Don't You Carry..."

Illume is an experience for readers that's meant to showcase a careful selection of titles much in the same way an art gallery would display an exhibition.

Titles are always shown "cover forward", and our inventory rotates to reflect current reader interests, shifting topics, and obscure finds. That said, we LOVE recommendations! Let us know what you're looking for, or what your favorite reads are. You may find them on the shelves soon!

Whether you're a stacked to the brim library connoisseur, or a minimalist looking for a rare gem... we hope you'll enjoy our open space, find a new treasure, and experience the cozy reading couch🤍
